The dining table is an essential and obviously valuable piece of furniture when it comes to home décor as well as the comfortable use of a home. The dining table is also one of those gifts that can be passed on generationally, as well as dropped off by well meaning parents. When you end up with too many dining tables, your options are limited.
You can store them, sell them, toss them, or use them. Of course, you aren’t going to want to use them all as an eating surface, no matter how many friends drop by. Most people just lack that kind of dining space. So why not use them as decorative alternatives to other pieces of furniture? This keeps them in full use while it prevents wasted articles throughout the home.
The basics are relatively simple. Choose one for your dining area. Don’t choose by favoritism for the person who gave it to you, or worse yet fear of hurting their feelings. This is your home and you have to live with it. The rest you can use throughout the home as decorative and useful pieces. The place where you gather and eat is special. It is more than just a symbol of food and good times, but it the one place where family of all kinds comes together in love and laughter. It is essential.
Hopefully you have a little extra space in the kitchen so that you can use one of the smaller dining tables as an extra kitchen table. This is the perfect place for those tables that have fold down leaves so that you can customize the size proportions.
This is the perfect addition for any kitchen that is home to a baker. It takes quite a bit of space from time to time to make sure that those baked goods come out just right. A place for the dough to rise, the cakes to be decorated, and the flour to spread is perfect for anyone with a love for the pastry.
Wall space is primary for using a dining table as a decorative table. Making a simple but effective runner from a tablecloth will help protect the table but it will also make a decorative statement. Using an odd number of decorative pieces, as even numbers make the eye travel funny, you can turn the table into anything decorative that fits you and your home.
If you need a little extra space for a second TV, a spare dining table can be just the right answer. Protect the table well, but you can arrange the table to hold all of the pertinent electronics much more easily that you can a dining room table. In fact, you can keep it much neater, more organized, and more appealing to the eye.
Finally, you can use a spare dining table as an extra space for getting a little work done or for keeping your financial obligations straight. Keeping the bills, the computer, or a daily journal right where you can get to them doesn’t have to be messy. This is a great addition to a spare room.

With the great trends toward using your yard as part of your house, more and more people are discovering how to best utilise their patios, decks, and gardens as dining or living rooms. These outdoor living spaces can be usable all year long in many areas. One of the challenges to using your outdoor spaces in this manner is lighting them.
There are many elements in a well designed outdoor living space. A good arrangement of furniture, clear access to the inside of your house, noise levels from surrounding streets or properties, all of these things help determine how useable your outdoor space will be. But, even the best designed outdoor living space can be ruined if there isn’t appropriate lighting.
There are myriad types of lighting that you can use in your garden depending on the effect that you want to achieve.
You can use spotlights directed at particular areas of the garden that you want to highlight to give the area a magical feel. Hanging lanterns are a nice option to string across a space or between trees. Strings of lights can be wrapped around tree trunks to create a unique effect. Pathways can be lit with lights that you spike into the ground alongside your walkways. Even ponds can be lit with submersible lights if your fish don’t mind.
The other major choice in backyard lighting is that of energy sources. If you want your lights to come on automatically when darkness falls and you don’t want to have to pay for the electricity to run the lights, solar lighting may be just what you need. Most solar systems work well even when the days are overcast as well.
Another method for outdoor lighting is using candles or groups of candles to provide a warm flickering glow. The downside to using candles is that they need to be supervised as they can be a fire hazard, especially in the hot dry summer months. The nice thing about candles is that you can set them out single in jars or cluster them for more intense light. There are many kinds of lanterns available for myriad different looks.
If you have well-placed electrical sockets in your backyard then you may want to opt for electrical lighting. Most strings of lights require a plug in, though some types are available with battery power. There are even outdoor lamps akin to living room lamps that are designed for outdoor use.
Take a good look at the parts of your garden that you might like to highlight with your lighting and also how much lighting that you will need to best utilise your outdoor living space. If you make your lighting decisions based on your needs, then you will end up with a space that is usable instead of a dim uninviting space.

Many people have difficulty trying to figure out what the options for to accommodate the furniture needs that they need in a small space. For most people this is made even more difficult because they have been using traditional pieces of furniture throughout their lives.
There are many options available for accommodating all of the functional needs that a person has in a small space. It just takes creative planning and some thinking out of the box. Follows are some suggestions for making the small space you are trying to live in more comfortable.
All great discoveries are made after a need is recognized and a plan put into action. So, the first step is to make a plan. Starting with knowing exactly how much space is in the area that you are going to be using and what activities need to take place in this area. Studio apartments are a great example of needing to have furniture that will accommodate all of the activities of a lifestyle in one small space. Aside from a kitchen and bathroom these rooms are usually just a big square box that is not quite large enough to use.
One trick for making a small space workable is to make a commitment not to purchase any piece of furniture that does not do double or triple duty. A table lamp is nice, however that will require an individual to get a table and a chair which will cause a cramped space. Manufacturers today design furniture especially for small spaces. One type of space saver is a table that has is shaped like a cube with a lamp build into it. The bottom part of the cube is a pull-out storage area and is large enough to contain clothing or sweaters.
While pull out sofas are a great idea in reality most people are just too tired at the end of the day to pull them out. Or, they are in a hurry in the morning and don’t fold them back up. Daybeds are made that look and feel like sofas and beds. By purchasing one of these beds in a captains style a person also gets two pull out drawers under the ‘bed’ that hold folded clothing. This is a great convenience and the bed, sofa, dresser is saving the space that would be used if each one of those pieces of furniture were purchased separately.
Even a minimalist, small space requires a comfortable chair where a person can relax and reflect. By investing in a comfortable and fashionable chair the focal points of the room change and there appears to be more space.
Accessories in the room, including pictures on the wall, throw rugs, etc., should be smaller than one would find in a larger room. This simple change will give the illusion of space and make the room seem larger.
If purchasing furniture includes a television stand it should be one that contains drawers or shelves for clothing or books. By making sure that every piece of furniture is providing more than one functional service within the space it is possible to feel like an individual is in a roomy and spacious space.
